That reminds me of one of my favorite parts of OEWBG: the part where he explains the significance of “What’s good?” Such a good writer!

You got me googling Sorry To Bother You! It's a movie right up my alley. I love chuckling at dystopian comedies. Have you watched They Cloned Tyrone?

Angela Jones's avatar

I have not, but I’ve heard that title! I’ll have to look into it… assuming you recommend it?

Elaine Wong's avatar

Yes I highly recommend it.

I will always pick up what you put down, although it runs through my fingers like sand, as I haven’t read/seen much of any of this (I got the “10 Things I Hate About You” reference, phew). But such a brilliant read, and so much fun. You are an awesome writer.💕

You’re the best, Sheila!

No, YOU are.🤘

I must watch Sorry to Bother You after reading this post! And this post also confirms my decision to skip both Vuong’s books as well as A Little Life. I don’t know that it would be triggering for me so much as just depressing and anxiety producing, and I try to avoid that in my reading, which probably sounds awful and superficial but I’ve read plenty along those lines over the years and maybe some day I’ll be open to that again. I am awfully naive when it comes to “cinema” and really know nothing about film. Maybe a recs list for newbies? Off Campus sounds fun but probably not for this old crone, though I do feel like I need to watch Heated Rivalry yet again.

I get that re: heavy books, though personally I love a good cry. (A Little Life never made me cry, though—it mostly made me mad, most often at the author!) Oh man, I wouldn’t even know how to approach a movie list for newbies… but I’m not turned off by the idea!

A starter list for people who are not cinephiles

Ok, I definitely chewed this over while having dinner… nothing’s jumping out yet, but I’m intrigued by the possibilities!

Of course you are in q cinema club!!!!!! You are toooo cool for me! If you need some foreign movies reco let me know I have a ton. Hahaha I laughed with your review-Off Campus. It is pure fantasy for sure and the storyline it’s so bland but I don’t know why I watched in one day hahah.

Angela Jones's avatar

Oh, I love a good foreign film—you have any recs that would go with my apples or oranges here? Or what’s a good one you’ve seen recently?

Off Campus got you too??!! lol that’s crazy

I’ll send you a list soon! I’m moving houses so I’ll be busy but I’ll DM you a list of my favorite movies. Hahha yep and it’s a little bit embarrassing to admit it hahah. I haven’t forgotten about the questions too, just know that!

Oh girl, say less—moving is no fun! Take your time 😘

I'm putting Sorry To Bother You on my list, it sounds really interesting! I've also never properly watched Y Tu Mama Tambien. I think I tried in my late teens/early 20s but couldn't get into it. I think I'm in a better place now.

I've been hesitant about Off Campus because I loved Heated Rivalry so much, and I feel like I'd get disappointed. I think what made Heated Rivalry so gripping were the cultural/social tensions that kept Shane and Ilya apart/in denial for so long. What's stopping a hetero hockey couple from being together? Is there any tension? Idk maybe I'll give it a shot on a sick day too lol.

Angela Jones's avatar

If you watch them both, you’ve gotta let me know if you see the parallels! As for Off Campus… yeah, Heated Rivalry it is not. If I had to choose between the two, HR would definitely win.

I laughed out loud when I got to the Off Campus review. I loved it but agree it is puuuure fantasy!!!!!

Reformed fuckboy Garrett giggles at literally everything “Wellsy” (hate it so much) says!! It was probably a perfect “sick in bed” watch
